I primarily translate from Estonian into English, but occasionally also from Italian into English. My forte is creative texts and anything that benefits from a native speaker’s touch: sales and marketing texts, speeches, newspaper and magazine articles, interviews, even poetry and literature. My 25+ years in Estonia mean that my translator fingerprints are all over the country, from restaurant menus to bank websites, and from Song Celebration programmes to official addresses given by the country’s head of state. I’m also adept at localisation, tailoring translations – linguistically and geographically – to their target audience.

As an editor, I deal with all manner of texts, including those on subjects I don’t translate myself (such as medicine, technology and law, which I leave to professionals in those fields). I edit not just Estonian-English translations, but texts translated from many different languages into English, as well as those penned in English in the first place. The evolution of the industry means I’m also very familiar with AI and machine translations and what needs to be taken into account when editing them. As a rule, the editing service I offer always goes beyond mere proofreading, so as to ensure that the final text is as good as it can be.

Over the years, I’ve trained fellow teachers, colleagues in the translation industry (both new and experienced translators and editors, locally and internationally) and clients in the public and private sectors. My courses have ranged from short and sweet, completed in just a couple of hours, to full-day and multi-day events, both in person and online. I tailor them to meet the needs of the audience, but one thread that runs through all my courses is that I try to make them as practical and interactive as possible – that way, the participants find them more beneficial and they’re more enjoyable for everyone involved.

For some people, speaking in English is even more important to them than being able to read and write it, whether because they regularly have to give presentations or perform in the language, or simply need it for everyday communication. In that regard, I’ve worked with a lot of clients to boost both their fluency and their confidence in spoken English, offering everything from conversation classes to rehearsals and on-set guidance for actors when filming. One of my claims to fame was that I was even in the ear of Eurovision 2002 hosts Annely Peebo and Marko Matvere throughout the contest here in Tallinn!

My knowledge of other languages mean I also have a keen insight into the workings of English, and I pride myself on my command of its vocabulary and grammar. I’ve done my best to pass this on to students ranging in ages from 15-75, on general and custom-made courses in both language-school and in-company settings. Having being actively using Estonian myself for more than two decades, including on a day-to-day basis at work and at home, I’m particularly well placed to teach English to Estonian speakers for my familiarity with both languages. I’ve even co-authored English language textbooks for Estonian schools.

Alongside being a translator, editor, teacher, coach and trainer, I’ve long served as an all-purpose consultant when it comes to English. That covers all sorts of things, from simple recommendations on wording to full song lyrics, and from copywriting and voiceover work to more ambitious undertakings (such as the facility-wide audit I carried out at Tallinn Airport to check and improve the use of English on its signage and website). I also had the opportunity to flex my creative, managerial and journalistic muscles when I worked on the Eurovision Song Contests in Tallinn and Helsinki in 2002 and 2007, respectively.
